Mother kills children and self + Chinese Taboos
By platinumgirl on May 30, 2007 in Coffee Talk, Home & Parenting
I read a news today on www.msnbc.com that a woman in Texas had actually hung her 4 children and then attempted suicide herself. All dead except for the youngest baby girl aged 8 months. What on earth is that woman thinking? Obviously i do not know what actually happened for her to resort to such cruel act (unless like what is mentioned in the news). But to bring all her little children ages 5, 3, 2 and that baby girl of 8 months to the grave is just unacceptable.

That is one of the many cases of parents killing themselves and bringing their innnocent child/children along. I know that sometimes life is hard at times, but there must a way or another to solve the problem.
Here, I would like to touch on the topic of parenting for a bit. Being a Chinese, i am surrounded by Chinese beliefs and taboos, mostly mentioned by my MIL. It is kinda hard to not listen to your MIL, you know. I dont like to follow certain ’stupid’ rules.
One thing i dont like is I am supposed to say opposite things about my child. For example, i said he slept very well … then i was told not to say it, otherwise he will end up not being able to sleep well. —- Malaysian english entering —- Bla bla bla …….. i just want to say that i dont like it lar ……. so sien ar, ppl teaching me how to raise my kid. I know la —– sort of proper English again —– I dont like to be binded by pantang larang. Its so suffocating. It is enough to say that it is very hard to raise a child. But I’m very proud of my baby boy. From a small weakling that needs full attention from mummy and daddy, he is now a pretty strong boy that have learned to crawl (quite fast you know) and stand and grabbing things and want to get his own way ……..
Hubby and myself have agreed not to spoil our child (or children in the future). Sometimes there is just so much things that i wanna buy for my baby. Nice clothes, learning toys … i am more keen on buying for him toys that are more on developing their thinking skills.
Babies are such smart and curious creatures. Mine is no exception. When he sees something new, he wants to hold it and he must have it. If its not dangerous, i will let him hold it and later, explain to him what the thing is and its functions. He’s a very cute boy. Unfortunately, i will not show you his photos. Privacy bar.
What about you parents out there? How do you raise or plan to raise your kids ?
